This is for an Electric Diesel Fuel Pump
This is for a universal electronic diesel fuel injection pump. This fuel pump is a direct replacement for many different brands and models. This part is most commonly found on small equipment that use diesel engines from 6hp to 10hp but can be found on other models as well. These engines fall within the 186, 178, and 170 engine family groupings. For example, these engine families are equivalent to the Yanmar L100, L90, L75, and L70 engines.
This pump has an electric solenoid that requires 12v of power and is used to stop fuel flow. This part is most commonly used on equipment that has an electric start feature but can also be used for an electric stop. When the solenoid is sent power the plunger opens to allow fuel flow. When there is no power the plunger is down and blocks fuel flow, stopping the engine.
The small diesel engines that use this fuel injection pump can have variances in the block. Therefore, the fuel pump in these engines are shimmed to accommodate these variances. Most commonly the shims being used for the old fuel pump will work for the new pump but that is not always the case. For installation it is recommended that you install the pump as is and then test run the engine.
If a diesel engine currently uses this style of pump and fuel is not flowing this solenoid is a very common issue. If the engine will not run and you suspect it isn’t getting fuel you can test the components. Without turning over the engine remove the soft fuel line from the pump. If you are getting fuel from that soft line then the tank and filters are fine. Replace the soft line, barely loosen the hard line on top of the pump, and turn the engine over using electric or recoil start. If fuel comes out there your pump is pumping fuel from the tank and is fine. If you are not getting fuel out of the top of the pump remove the solenoid and take out the plunger then repeat the last test. After removing the solenoid, if you then have fuel the solenoid is bad and needs replaced. If there is no fuel coming out after the solenoid plunger is removed you will need to replace the pump and test the injector after the pump replacement.
